How do we get to a detailed 3D model - steps and questions

The main strength of our visualizations is clarity - no space for misinterpretation. Solution is as it looks like - in detail. But to achieve it we need to dive deep into the solution first. To understand building constraints, flow, and key requirements that drive solution.

This approach we use for all the projects to make sure that the 3D model reflects your solution in 100%. In the article, I would like to show you steps and questions we usually ask during the process of warehouse solution 3D modeling.

It all starts with requirements

The most essential task for the solution is to fulfil customer requirements. This usually drive your solution design and narrowing possible ways to execute it. We will not ask you for customer data, as it is obvious that this is confidential. For us your solution matters. At the beginning we usually ask about:

  • What is building specification? (size, pillars grid, docks, office)

  • What is your solution, and how do you see it from a flows perspective?

  • What are main focus areas? (Your customer was focused on particular area or process stage in previous talks and you know it will be a topic in further stages)

  • Potential risks?

Getting into the details

When starting, understanding concept as a whole is crucial, no need for detailed specification of packing tables or sorter. But when we get more and more into detail, we will start to ask more specific questions. (Do not worry, you do not need to answer all of them, for standard areas like packing or returns we can use out library objects and adjust at later stage).

  • What is the specification of the conveyors you want to use? (width and height)

  • What does returns processing look like?

  • How shuttle will be fed?

  • What type of sorter have you selected?

  • How packing table will be connected to picking areas and outbound sorter?

More data, or visual information you will be able to provide, the better for model quality.

These are just examples of questions we usually ask to be able to visualize your solution elements properly.

Validation

With key areas finished, we can validate the whole model and solution. Double-check the surface calculated for operation and internally share the solution model for remarks. Visual representation of the solution design gives the unique possibility to involve, at a low time cost, more people who are taking part in the project, still at the offer preparation stage. That’s highly beneficial for getting more perspectives and optimizing solutions at a very early stage.

All of it looks like a time-consuming process, but it is not. Usually even for complex projects less than an hour for an explanation of the solution and details will be enough.
